Response to the Care Quality Commission’s report highlighting an increase in detentions under the Mental Health Act.
Katharine Sacks-Jones, Director of Agenda, says:
“We believe that the Mental Health Act in its current form is not working for women – so any increase in detentions is of grave concern.
“With growing pressure on community services, women and girls are often having to reach crisis point before they can get support.
“More than half of women with a mental health problem have experienced abuse. Yet, this is often not taken into account when women and girls are detained, resulting in care that fails to meet their needs and can even make situations worse.
“It is vital we see investment in mental health services across the board, but particularly community support to ensure women get the support they need, when they need it.
“This means support that takes into account women and girls needs and experiences, especially of abuse and trauma.”
